DV Camera and PC communications

I'm having trouble getting my PC and camcorder to communicate. I considered marriage guidance but the PC wasn't too keen.
My operating system is Win Me, the video capture card and software is Ulead and the camera a Panasonic DV8. The 1394 device is listed in the device manager, but no camera. The software doesn't recognise the camera, and the camera manufacturers tell me that the DV port is enabled on the model I have.
Any ideas before I consign another promising relationship to the dustbin ?

This can only be either a driver problem or a capture software problem. Try downloading the latest drivers from the web site and/or try different capture software to transfer the stuff to your hard disk.

try making sure that the camera is connected and powered up *before* you switch on the computer. sometimes that helps (but not always).
